Nagini, Voldemort’s snake, is an important part of both the Dark Lord himself and the whole story in general. Nagini is not only Voldemort’s closest ally, but also one of his Horcruxes, which contains the soul of one of the most powerful dark wizards of all time.
But one question pops up here. And how did the Dark Lord stumble upon Nagini and decide that she was worthy of becoming one of his Horcruxes?
Throughout the series, Voldemort has been associated with snakes. When he first appeared in his revived form in Goblet of Fire, his noseless face resembled a snake. Throughout almost all books, history has pointed to the connection of Voldemort with snakes, and even the symbol of Slytherin, the faculty where the Dark Lord studied, was a snake.
Voldemort could speak to snakes and was the only one who could control Basil in the Chamber of Secrets. Therefore, it is not surprising that at some point he appeared accompanied by a large snake, which many perceived as an unusual pet of the Dark Lord.
So, Nagini is one of the closest followers of the Dark Lord and perhaps the closest being to him. He made her a Horcrux, which marks their closeness, and even Dumbledore mentioned that his bond with the snake is on a completely different level than with any other living being.
However, the story of their meeting is difficult to piece together. Initially, it was speculated that Voldemort found her in Albania between 1981 and 1994, when he wandered in a ghostly form and inhabited the bodies of many animals (however, only snakes could carry him in their body). Also in the summer of 1994, Voldemort massacred a sorceress named Bertha Jorkins, and it was thanks to this massacre that he made Nagini a Horcrux.
But this theory of their meeting was turned upside down in the second part of Fantastic Beasts, which was set in 1927. The film revealed that Nagini is not really an ordinary snake, but Maledictus, a woman cursed to turn into a snake. There she was a young woman who was friends with Credence Barebone and performed at the Arcanus Circus. They planned to help, and it was Nagini who helped Credence reveal his true identity.
And this whole story made even more mess in the theory of the meeting between Voldemort and Nagini. Obviously, something happened between the time she joined Newt and the main events of Harry Potter. She may even have met Voldemort when he was still Tom Riddle, and they began an affair. Perhaps she saw something in young Tom that reminded her of Credence.
There is also speculation that Voldemort met Nagini when she finally lost the ability to leave her snake form and was trapped in her for many years. Since Voldemort was able to communicate with snakes, he became a symbol of hope and warmth for the desperate Nagini, who not only met a person who could talk to her, but also look into her thoughts.
Perhaps Voldemort made promises that he believed he could keep, or with which he, on the contrary, deceived Nagini.
One way or another, whatever the history of the relationship between Voldemort and Nagini, one cannot deny the closeness of their connection, because she allowed herself to be turned into a Horcrux. This story has great potential, but it is unlikely that it will be revealed in more detail in the near future. So far, all that readers and viewers have is scanty scraps of various information.
